Facility
AHZMU has a total construction area of 310,000 square meters. The licensed beds are 2000, while it offers in practice 2800 beds. There are 17 administrative departments, 7 specialized affiliations, 50 clinical and medical departments, 12 technological departments. There are 5 national key clinical specialty projects including plastic and cosmetic surgery, gastroenterology, anesthesiology, neurology and clinical nursing, 1 Chinese first-class discipline (clinical medicine), 17 provincial medical key disciplines, 19 provincial key clinical specialties, 11 national training bases, 10 provincial medical quality control centers and 11 provincial specialty training bases. It operates high-end medical equipment such as PET-CT, Da Vinci Robot etc.
Human Resources
Among 4,374 hospital staff, there are 815 staff members with senior professional titles; 1 staff has been elected to Young and Middle-aged Leading Innovative Talent in Science and Technology in the national "Innovative Talent Promotion Plan"; 1 staff has been elected to national New Century Talents Project; 2 staff have elected to the New Century Excellent Talents Project of the Ministry of Education; 3 staff have been elected to provincial Innovative Talents Project (Ten and Hundred Levels); 11 staff have been bestowed provincial Outstanding Young Talents in Science and Technology; 2 staff have been bestowed Young and Middle-aged Experts with Brilliant Contributions Honored by NHC; 15 staff receive special government allowances from the State Council; 10 staff receive special government allowances from the People’s Government of Guizhou Province; 13 staff are provincial core experts and provincial managed experts.
Clinical Care
AHZMU is committed to carrying out cutting-edge technologies. It takes the lead in the area of penetrating flap technology and minimally invasive cervical spine technology in China, as well as the early cancer screening by gastrointestinal endoscopy and neuro-endoscopy in southwest China. The hospital, accredited for heart transplant, kidney transplant and liver transplant, attaches great importance to organ donation and transplant. By January 2023, a total of 307 cases of organ donation have been completed and 911 large organs have been obtained; 393 cases of kidney transplants, 100 cases of liver transplants and 17 cases of heart transplant have been completed. In 2022, AHZMU received 2.1479 million outpatient visits, discharged 140,100 patients from hospitalization and completed 99,900 operations. The average days of hospitalization was 7.83 days. According to national surveillance ranking data released in 2022, AHZMU kept A-plus in terms of national performance appraisal of tertiary public hospitals. In 2021, AHZMU ranked the first in provincial performance appraisal of public hospitals that aims to promote high-quality development in Guizhou Province.
Medical education
It is one of the first batch of demonstrative centers for national clinical education and training. It’s clinical experimental teaching demonstrating center was designated as a National Experimental Teaching Demonstrating Center, also as a National Medical Licensing Text Practice Skill Examination (clinical category) base. It has a M.D. program in clinical medicine, 2 master degree programs in clinical Medicine and nursing (National first-level undergraduate construction program).
The hospital owns 25 national standardized residency training bases. Its specialty training bases of internal medicine, emergency medicine and general medicine belonged to the key specialty bases for residency training in China. Cardiovascular medicine, general surgery and pediatric anesthesiology were designated as national specialist standardized training bases.
Science Research
AHZMU is the branch of 3 national institutes for clinical research. It has 2 provincial key laboratories, 3 provincial clinical medical research centers, 1 collaborative innovation center co-sponsored by the People’s Government of Guizhou Province and NHC, 2 provincial "2011 collaborative innovation centers", 2 provincial talent bases, 14 provincial science and technology innovation talent teams, 4 provincial key laboratories and engineering research centers in higher education and 5 provincial teams of scientific and technological innovation talents in higher education.
In the past 5 years, AHZMU has conducted 149 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It received 19 provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological achievements, 2 of which were first-class awards for provincial scientific and technological progress, and 57 national invention patents.
In 2022, 12 disciplines ranked among the top hundred disciplines in China in terms of Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for 2021. Four disciplines ranked among the top 50 disciplines in China. With the most disciplines that were included in STEM rankings, AHZMU have remained its dominance in Guizhou Province for 6 consecutive years (2016-2021). Additional academic achievements for AHZMU: 13 disciplines got listed in Accumulative Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (ASTEM) rankings; the number of top hundred disciplines ranked the first in Guizhou Province; 12 disciplines such as anesthesiology ranked the first in Guizhou Province; 3 disciplines such as burn retained top 33.
Social responsibility
The hospital assumed social responsibility actively, tirelessly reflecting its social responsibility of large national public hospitals in major events such as the rural revitalization, eradicating absolute poverty, fighting against the COVID-19 epidemic. Ma Xiaowei, director of the National Health Commission (then deputy director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission) gave the hospital high praise during his visit: "Nowadays, the AHZMU has been a microcosm of the achievements in the reform and development of national public hospitals. The level of medical technology, the degree of connotation construction and informatization have shown that the hospital is a modern large-scale tertiary hospital in line with international standards.”
